our commitment to sustainability

Positively Managing the Environment

Our approach strengthens and enriches the environments in which we work; actively restoring, repairing and enhancing the natural ecosystems we operate within.

Morris Family Foundation

Whilst mostly operating in the southern hemisphere, the Morris Family Foundation supports innovative, grassroots projects working to address critical social, economic, and environmental issues, by creating systemic change to tackle their root causes.

The Foundation works towards environmental and social justice across our five areas of focus: community transitions for a safe climate; regenerative agricultural systems; Australia’s oceans and reefs; First Nations Australians and; International development.

Environment

Our commitment to the environment, and our environment, inspires us to manage the Estate as sustainability as we can.

All trees and flora across the estate are managed through a defined ecology strategy agreed with Dorset County Council to protect the natural environment. We have deployed, and will continue to deploy, solar panels on the Estate with a commitment to continue to use renewables, and provide a bank of electric car charging ports.

Heritage

Our commitment to the heritage of the Estate and its surrounding areas inspires us to actively engage with local heritage organisations to ensure history is preserved.

We have worked with local museums and the Dorset Garden Trust to protect the history of the Estate. Our investment in the Church Ope Cove Trail is designed to improve the knowledge and experience for Church Ope Cove visitors and is run in partnership with Portland Museum. We also collect donations for Portland Museum through the Hayloft.

Culture

The Estate is a core sponsor of b-side, an internationally recognised and locally loved arts organisation that both embodies and enriches its place of origin – the Isle of Portland in Dorset.

We also open the grounds in the summertime for both outdoor cinemas and plays for the benefit of both our guests and the local community.

Our Community

We’re committed to our community, hosting a variety of local charitable events, as well as providing donations and providing free usage of the Castle to local charities. We also work with local schools and colleges, offering an apprenticeship programme for young people.
