Cycling on the Isle of Portland offers a unique experience with its rugged coastal terrain, panoramic sea views, and intriguing historical landmarks, providing a range of cycling opportunities for different skill levels.

Portland Loop / Road Circuit

  • Type: On-road loop
  • Distance: ~13 miles (21 km)
  • Difficulty: Moderate (some steep climbs and descents)
  • Highlights:
    • A full circuit of the island, often following parts of the South West Coast Path by road.
    • Panoramic views from the top of New Ground over Chesil Beach and Weymouth.
    • Passes Portland Bill, Tout Quarry, and The Verne.
  • Tip: Be prepared for steep gradients, especially near Fortuneswell and the climb up from Chesil Beach.

Portland to Weymouth (via Rodwell Trail)

  • Type: Off-road & family-friendly
  • Distance: ~6 miles (10 km) one way
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Highlights:
    • Starts from Ferry Bridge at the base of Portland.
    • Connects to the Rodwell Trail, a converted railway line into Weymouth.
    • Flat and tarmacked – ideal for hybrid or leisure bikes.
    • Scenic views of Portland Harbour, and good for birdwatching along The Fleet Lagoon.
  • Good for: Families, casual cyclists, or anyone looking for a gentle coastal ride.

Quarry & Coastline Trails

  • Type: Mixed terrain (off-road, gravel, coastal tracks)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard
  • Highlights:
    • Tout Quarry and Kingbarrow Quarry offer fun, challenging trails for MTB/gravel riders.
    • Explore inland paths through Portland’s rocky interior and along the cliffside above Church Ope Cove.
    • Some paths are rough and require good handling skills.

Cycle-Friendly Cafés & Stops

  • The Lobster Pot Café (Portland Bill): Great for a refuel with sea views.
  • Quiddles Café (Chiswell): Popular with cyclists and walkers.
  • Billy Winters (Ferrybridge): Funky beach bar vibe with bike racks and seaside dining.
  • Heights Hotel (top of the hill): A classic stop with panoramic views and refreshments.

🛠️ Tips & Practical Info

  • Terrain: Be ready for steep climbs and some narrow or winding roads. A bike with decent gears is essential.
  • Bike Hire: While there’s no dedicated hire shop on Portland, nearby Weymouth has several options.
  • Safety: Main roads are narrow in places, so wear high-vis and be cautious.
  • Weather: The island is very exposed – wind can be a big factor!
