Best Climbing Spots in Portland – Insights from UEA Climbing Club

The Front Rows serves as an ideal base for those eager to explore the island and all it has to offer, especially for adventure enthusiasts. Portland is renowned as a top destination for rock climbing, and we are thrilled to welcome back the UEA Climbing Club each year. Recently, we spoke with Megan from the club to gain insight into why they choose The Front Rows as their base for exploration every year.
How did you find out about Portland as a climbing destination?
Portland has been a tradition for the climbing club for many years as our final week long trip at the end of the year so we continue to pass that down year after year.
Why did you choose the Front Rows to stay for your trip?
The Front Rows provide an ideal base for our trips. Staying at the Front Rows allows us to safely store all our belongings while we spend the day climbing. Its location is convenient for walking to The Cuttings and The Boulder Field, two of our favorite climbing spots. Each morning, we can easily stroll down to Church Cove beach for a swim, and some evenings we return for the same. Additionally, it’s a short drive to Blacknor and Cheyne for more climbing opportunities.
What did you enjoy the most about staying at The Front Rows?
We love the accessibility of the local climbing and beach, as well as having a more luxurious stay for the end of the year, compared to our usual ‘hut’ stays. The views are amazing, the staff are brilliant, and the caravans are a perfect home away from home after we have driven 6 hours to Portland! It is one of our favourite places!
What have been your favourite climbing spots in Portland so far?
I think I speak for everyone when I say there is nothing like climbing down at Blacknor Beach, right on top of the ocean, endless views, and what feels like you could be climbing in Croatia. The Cuttings are also a classic spot, and we love being able to walk down there to climb.
Would you recommend Portland and The Front Rows to other student climbers or outdoor enthusiasts?
Absolutely!! We wouldn’t stay anywhere else!
Any advice for first-timers heading to Portland to climb?
Enjoy it, try to explore the island as much as possible, it’s easy to stay in one area and miss out on so many cool spots that Portland has to offer like Battleship (which can be difficult to find the first time), but also be safe – keep an eye on local updates for rock fall, ensure you are adhering to climbing etiquette where possible and make sure to keep an eye on the tides if climbing in certain areas or deep water soloing.
